Dharwad botanists uncover 4 new species of vegetation in Western Ghats

A workforce of researchers led by botanist Prof. Ok. Kotresha from Karnatak Science College, Dharwad, has found 4 information species of vegetation within the Western Ghats of Karnataka throughout floristic explorations.

According to a launch issued by Prof. Ok. Kotresha, Professor of Taxonomy and Floristic Laboratory, Department of UG, PG and Research in Botany of Karnatak University’s Karnatak Science College, the discoveries had been made throughout floristic explorations throughout 2024-25 and have been revealed in numerous worldwide journals.

Prof. Kotresha says the estimated plant species across the globe are round 30,00,000, and up to now 2,50,000 species are recognized whereas 27,50,000 species are to but be found.

The workforce began exploring species from totally different districts in Karnataka as a part of the floristic survey and has accomplished the survey in eight districts until now. The survey is on within the remaining districts.

Of the 4 newly found species, three are from totally different locations within the districts of Uttara Kannada, whereas one is from Shivamogga district.

What are the brand new species?

The new species reported from Central Western Ghat has been named as Oberonia marnkuliensis Shreyas & Kotresha because it was collected at Marnkuli Hill, “Marnkuli Village” close to Talaguppa, Sagara taluk, Shivamogga district. The discovery of it was revealed in Richardiana worldwide journal.

The plant species found at Kali Tiger Reserve in Uttara Kannada district has been named as Zeuxine seetharamii (Betageri & Kotresha), after eminent taxonomist retired Prof. Y.N. Seetharam, Department of Botany, Gulbarga University, Kalaburagi. The discovery was revealed in Asian Journal of Research in Botany.

The plant explored from Goregudda, Hindgaon, Kumta taluk, Uttara Kannada district has been named as Parasopubia gorensis (Patgar, Betageri & Kotresha) after Godess Goreshwara temple from Lateritic plateau of ‘Goregudda’. It was revealed in worldwide journal Phytotaxa.

The species discovered at Mirjan Fort, Mirjan village, Kumta taluk has been as Utricularia kumtensis (Kanoj, Patgar, Betageri & Kotresha) and its discovery was revealed in worldwide journal Phytotaxa, the discharge mentioned.
