Drugs Control Administration seizes spurious anti-epileptic drug falsely branded as Sun Pharma product

The Drugs Control Administration, Telangana, seized spurious tablets falsely branded as ‘Levipil 500’, a widely used medicine for the treatment of epilepsy, during raids conducted across the State on Tuesday.

Acting on specific intelligence, DCA officials carried out inspections at several drug dealers’ outlets, leading to the detection of a counterfeit version of Levipil 500 tablets, which are claimed to contain Levetiracetam 500 mg and are commonly prescribed to control seizures. The seized drug was found to be falsely labelled as a product manufactured by Sun Pharma Laboratories Ltd.

During the raids, a special team detected counterfeit stocks of Levipil 500 tablets at the premises of Durga Medical and General Stores, located in Sudharsan Reddy Nagar, Chintal, under the limits of Quthbullapur village and mandal in Medchal–Malkajgiri district.

According to the DCA, the counterfeit tablets bore batch number GTF0885A, with a manufacturing date of April 2024 and an expiry date of March 2026. The packaging falsely claimed that the drug was manufactured by Sun Pharma Laboratories Ltd at its unit in Kokjhar village, Kamrup district, Assam. Officials said preliminary examination confirmed that the product was spurious and not manufactured by the stated company.

Further investigation would be conducted to trace the source of the counterfeit drug and identify all individuals involved in its manufacture, distribution and sale. Appropriate legal action will be initiated against those found responsible under the provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.

Warning that spurious drugs pose a serious threat to public health, officials said such medicines not only fail to treat the intended condition but can also lead to severe and long-term health complications.

The public has been urged to report complaints related to illegal activities involving medicines, including suspected unauthorised manufacturing or sale of drugs, narcotic drugs or psychotropic substances, through the Telangana Drugs Control Administration’s toll-free helpline number 1800-599-6969, which is operational on all working days from 10.30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
