Responding to a question by member Umashree in the Legislative Council on Friday, Minister for Kannada and Culture Shivaraj Tangadagi said that the State government will strictly implement the name board rules.
Mr. Tangadagi said the State government amended the Kannada Language Comprehensive Development Act, 2022, to ensure prominence to the Kannada language on name boards. “The Deputy Commissioners of districts are the authorities to implement the act effectively. Those who violate the rules will have to pay a penalty of ₹5,000 in the first instance. The penalty amount increases to ₹10,000 and ₹20,000 in case of repeating the violation, and finally, the firm may lose its licence to operate,” he stated.
Ms. Umashree insisted that the rule had not been effectively implemented in Bengaluru. She questioned the delay in constituting the committees to oversee the implementation of the law that was passed in February 2024.
The Minister claimed that in some districts the rule had been implemented 100%, while it was around 95% in a few others. “We will launch enforcement wings to identify those who violate the rules,” he said.
Further, he stated that the committees at the district levels and gram panchayat levels had been formed already and will start functioning soon.
