Heatwave conditions to intensify in parts of Andhra Pradesh
Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority said temperatures remained high across several districts on Wednesday, while weather systems influencing the region could trigger rain and thunderstorm activity in some areas today.
“Varied weather conditions are likely to prevail in the state. While heatwave conditions are expected in some areas, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are also likely at several places,” SDMA Managing Director Prakhar Jain said in an official release.
According to SDMA, severe heatwave conditions are likely in 46 mandals today, including 19 mandals in Vizianagaram district, 14 in Parvathipuram Manyam, 11 in Srikakulam, and one each in Alluri Sitarama Raju and Polavaram districts.
Heatwave conditions are likely in another 79 mandals, while the intensity is expected to increase further on Friday, when severe heatwave conditions are forecast in 85 mandals and heatwave conditions in 67 mandals, the authority said.
Temperatures between 43 degrees Celsius and 45 degrees Celsius are likely in parts of Eluru, Polavaram, NTR, Guntur, Palnadu, Prakasam and Nellore districts.
Several areas of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Parvathipuram Manyam, Alluri Sitarama Raju, Anakapalli, Visakhapatnam, Konaseema, Kakinada, East Godavari, West Godavari, Krishna, Bapatla and Markapuram districts are expected to record temperatures between 40 degrees Celsius and 42 degrees Celsius.
Meanwhile, a trough extending from Vidarbha through Telangana and Rayalaseema up to Tamil Nadu is likely to support rainfall activity in some parts of the state.
Under its influence, light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely at isolated places in Parvathipuram Manyam, Alluri Sitarama Raju, West Godavari and Eluru districts on Thursday.
Light rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is also likely at isolated places in the remaining districts, SDMA said.
On Wednesday, the highest temperature of 44.5 degrees Celsius was recorded at Nandanamarella in Markapuram district, followed by 44 degrees Celsius each at Pittalavanipalem in Bapatla district and Gudur in Nellore district.
Jain advised people to remain cautious in view of the prevailing heat conditions, particularly elderly persons, pregnant women and lactating mothers.
He further said people suffering from heart ailments, diabetes and blood pressure issues were advised to avoid moving around during peak heat hours and consume adequate quantities of water, lemon water, buttermilk and coconut water.
He also urged people not to take shelter under trees, electric poles or hoardings during thunderstorms and asked farmers and cattle rearers to move to safer locations when dark clouds gather and thunder is heard.
