A high-powered committee, led by Minister of State Nityanand Rai, held the final assembly on May 27. The committee is engaged in talks with Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) over the demand of the groupings for constitutional safeguards for the area.
The two teams demand Statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion underneath the Sixth Schedule (for tribal areas standing) of the Constitution.
Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk is at the moment sitting on a 35-day starvation strike together with different residents at Leh because the calls for weren’t met and the MHA had not held talks for a very long time.
Sajjad Kargili of the KDA posted on X, “MHA has determined to renew talks with the Ladakhis management — hope these talks will result in the restoration of democratic rights by way of statehood and sixth schedule for #Ladakh. We count on that these talks wouldn’t be for sake of it. It have to be outcome oriented.”
Ladakh grew to become a Union Territory in 2019 with no Legislative Assembly after Article 370 of the Constitution was learn down by Parliament.
A 12 months later, the area, comprising Buddhist-dominated Leh and Muslims-dominated Kargil district, erupted in protest with civil society leaders urgent forth constitutional safeguards resembling Statehood for Ladakh, inclusion of Ladakh within the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, job reservation for locals and a parliamentary seat every for Leh and Kargil.
