Kartarpur Corridor Services Suspended Amid Elevated Security Scenario : India

New Delhi – In light of the prevailing security situation along the India-Pakistan border, the services of the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor have been suspended until further directions, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced today. This decision reflects the heightened tensions and security concerns following recent cross-border hostilities initiated by Pakistan.

The Kartarpur corridor, a visa-free passage allowing Sikh pilgrims from India to visit the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur, Pakistan, is a significant symbol of religious connectivity between the two nations. Its suspension underscores the gravity of the current security scenario.

During a briefing, the MEA spokesperson addressed a question regarding the status of the corridor, confirming the temporary suspension. The spokesperson stated that the decision was taken “in view of the existing security scenario along the entire India-Pakistan border and the areas around the line of control.”

The intervening night of May 8th and 9th witnessed significant aggressive actions by the Pakistan military, including multiple airspace violations, large-scale drone intrusions targeting military infrastructure, heavy caliber shelling, and armed drone attacks in various sectors along the Line of Control and the international border. These actions have naturally led to an elevated security alert and operational posture on the Indian side.

The MEA spokesperson indicated that updates regarding the resumption of the Kartarpur corridor services would be provided “as and when there is a change in the situation.” This suggests that the duration of the suspension is directly linked to the security environment along the border and a return to a more stable and predictable situation.

The suspension, while impacting pilgrims, is a precautionary measure aimed at ensuring their safety and security in a volatile environment. Cross-border shelling and drone activity pose potential risks to movement and gatherings in border areas, making the temporary closure a necessary step.

The decision to suspend the corridor services comes amidst a broader context of Pakistan’s “provocative and escalatory actions,” which India has strongly condemned. These actions have included attempts to target not only military installations but also Indian cities and civilian infrastructure, as well as the targeting of religious places.

The MEA briefing, which included insights from Colonel Qureshi and Wing Commander Singh on the operational aspects of the recent Pakistani aggression and India’s response, provided the backdrop for the decision regarding the Kartarpur corridor. The priority remains the safety and security of Indian citizens and visitors, and the suspension is a direct consequence of the security risks posed by Pakistan’s actions. The duration of the suspension will depend on the assessment of the security situation by the relevant authorities.
