Speaking to reporters, he pointed out that the Chief Minister had earlier spoken about whose votes were removed from the rolls after the SIR in Bihar. He said more voters had been dropped off the rolls than anticipated in Tamil Nadu too. At a meeting of the DMK district secretaries held earlier, clear instructions were given on how to re-add the voters dropped off the rolls, those who were left out, and those who migrated. He said members of the public should verify whether their names were retained on the rolls, and voters could be re-included in the rolls till January 18.
Earlier in the day, Mr. Udhayanidhi inaugurated a newly constructed night shelter for the homeless near Anna Park on the Marina Beach in the Thiruvallikeni-Chepauk constituency. It was built at a cost of ₹86.4 lakh, with the capital funds of the Greater Chennai Corporation. It can accommodate 86 persons, according to an official release.
Kits comprising mats, pillows, and bed sheets were distributed to 86 people staying at the shelter located in the Teynampet Zone. The release said the shelter was constructed on 2,500 square feet for the homeless persons residing along the beach and making a living by selling handicrafts, balloons, cosmetics, and flowers.
The release added that the shelter has separate toilets and bathrooms for men and women, lockers, and drinking water and electricity supply. The Chennai Corporation has already been operating night shelters for the homeless at 45 locations.
Minister for Municipal Administration and Water Supply K.N. Nehru, elected representatives, and officials were present at the event.
