Jason Holder was the most impressive West Indian player on view. The 34-year-old claimed 17 wickets in 11 games at an average of 17.05 and an economy rate of 7.56.
In fact, his inclusion at the expense of Kiwi all-rounder Glenn Phillips turned the campaign around for Gujarat Titans. Holder, who was bought for ₹7 crore, reposed the faith of the GT team management with his canny seam bowling and electric fielding.
Nicholas Pooan was subdued for most part and by the time he regained form it was more or less curtains for Lucknow Super Giants. Pooran ended up with 234 runs from 14 innings at a strike rate of 127.86.
Kolkata Knight Riders’ Rovman Powell finished with 190 runs from seven innings, striking at 134.75.
Sherfane Rutherford was expected to make a big impact after his move from GT to Mumbai Indians for ₹2.6 crore. However, the southpaw lacked consistency in the middle-order. Rutherford had an overall tally of 123 from seven visits to the crease at a strike rate of 164 with an unbeaten 71 against Royal Challengers Bangalore in a losing cause being his best.
The burly Romario Shepherd had a rather quite season for RCB. He managed just 83 runs from seven innings with a highest score of 23 not out. Shepherd scalped seven with his medium-pacers from 15 games.
Another left-hander Shimron Hetmyer, who was retained for ₹11 crore by Rajasthan Royal ahead of IPL 2025, failed to get going. The left-hander aggregated just 78 runs from seven innings. He had a highest score of 22 and a strike rate of 113.04.
KKR’s trump card Sunil Narine was at his miserly best with the ball. The off-spinner picked up 15 wickets from 13 games and was the most economic at 6.64. Narine batted only four times and aggregated just 40 compared to the previous season where the veteran scored 246 from 12 innings.
Left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein blew hot and cold in the limited opportunities he got for Chennai Super Kings. Akeal took eight wickets from seven outings at an economy of 8.02, with four for 17 against MI easily the high point.
Overall, the display of the calypso kings left a lot to be desired. The franchise owners and fans will be hoping for a much better show next time around.
