Coimbatore to get new indoor sports complex soon

The new indoor sports complex being developed by the Coimbatore Corporation near the Nehru Indoor Stadium is nearing completion, with spaces for volleyball, kabaddi, badminton and wushu expected to be ready in a month.

District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar and Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran recently inspected the ongoing works and directed officials to expedite the project.

Officials said the complex would have two volleyball courts, two kabaddi courts, two badminton courts and a wushu arena. Plans are also under way to construct additional toilets and changing rooms and develop the premises into a combined sports complex.

The corporation is constructing the indoor volleyball facility at ₹2 crore under the civic body’s general fund. A spectators’ gallery is also being developed at ₹40 lakh under the Coimbatore Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme.

An indoor badminton facility is being built at ₹1.5 crore with support from ZF Group under its corporate social responsibility initiative.

The civic body is also constructing an indoor kabaddi facility at ₹1.5 crore, and a roofed indoor wushu arena at ₹96 lakh under the general fund.

Officials said the premises earlier had outdoor facilities and that the existing basketball court had already been converted into an indoor facility. The corporation subsequently took up the remaining works to develop the venue into a full-fledged indoor sports complex. Once completed, the facilities are expected to host local and national-level tournaments.
