Forecast of rain in Bengaluru till May 25, yellow alert issued

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for Bengaluru, forecasting continuous showers till May 25, after heavy rain and gusty winds lashed parts of the city till 3 a.m. on May 22, triggering power outages and multiple tree-fall incidents across several areas.

Heavy rain on May 21 evening had already disrupted normal life in several parts of the city, with Namma Metro services witnessing delays, and multiple areas reporting power cuts. According to the IMD, Bengaluru city recorded 44.2 mm of rainfall till 8.30 p.m. on May 21, while the HAL area received 3.8 mm.

Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) officials said rainfall intensified after midnight in many areas and continued till around 3 a.m., accompanied by strong winds that led to several trees and branches collapsing. 

Across GBA limits, 131 incidents of tree falls and 192 incidents of branch falls were reported as of 10.30 a.m. on May 22. By morning, 63 fallen trees and 95 branches had been cleared.

In the Central Corporation alone, GBA recorded 49 uprooted trees and 28 fallen branches. C.V. Raman Nagar reported the highest number of incidents, with 30 trees uprooted and six branches falling.

Shanthinagar recorded eight uprooted trees and four fallen branches, while Gandhinagar reported four uprooted trees and six fallen branches.

Tree-fall incidents were also reported from Shivajinagar, Chickpet and Chamarajpet within Central Corporation limits.

The rainfall disrupted power supply in several areas, with BESCOM officials attributing the outages to gusty winds and tree branches falling on power infrastructure. Many areas went without power overnight.
