Sridhar Vembu asks Indians on US visas to choose self-respect over green card, urges them to return home

Zoho’s Sridhar Vembu has shared a tweet in response to the new US policy, under which most immigrants seeking a green card would have to return to their home country to apply at an embassy or consulate abroad.

“Once again, my appeal to Indians in America on a visa. Please come home. Even if you feel it is hardship and sacrifice, self-respect should dictate your course. Let’s make Bharat proud,” he tweeted.

His reaction came after a Homeland Security tweet. “An alien who is in the U.S. temporarily and wants a Green Card must return to their home country to apply,” the agency wrote.

It added, “This policy allows our immigration system to function as the law intended instead of incentivizing loopholes. The era of abusing our nation’s immigration system is over.”

What did social media say?

An individual posted, “So, my researchers who are here on a visa will have to randomly leave to apply…that will just disrupt our work and their lives for no reason. Annoying, pointless, and counterproductive.”

Another added, “Ah, yes, forcing people who are already vetted and legally working or studying here to buy a plane ticket, leave their jobs, and wait in a years-long backlog abroad. Truly a masterclass in ‘making the system function’.”

A third expressed, “This is objectively stupid and will have extremely negative impacts on the US economy, you absolute turnips. Unreal. It is almost as though you *want* things to fail, or at the very least, don’t have any intention of stopping it from happening.”

While most criticised the new policy, some, however, extended their support for the immigration move.

“People who present applications that provide an economic benefit or otherwise are in the national interest will likely be able to continue on their current path,” a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) spokesperson told the BBC.

Under this new USCIS policy, many green card applicants would probably have to leave the United States while their cases are processed. It will affect several aspects of an individual’s life, forcing them to leave their relationships, job and home.
