Youths organs harvested, donated

The family members of K. Jegadeesh, 24, from Saruguvalayapatti in Melur taluk in Madurai district who was declared brain dead by doctors, decided to give a new lease of life to four persons by donating the youth’s organs, on Thursday.

Jegadeesh met with a road accident and was admitted to Meenakshi Mission Hospital for emergency treatment. He was shifted to Meenakshi Super Speciality Hospital for advanced care. Despite medical attention his health condition did not improve.

After conducting the necessary tests and confirming brain stem death as per protocol, the medical team counselled the family regarding organ donation. The family members consented to donate the youth’s organs for transplantation to needy patients.

Following approval from the government, organ retrieval procedure was carried out by the hospital’s medical team. The liver was transplanted at Meenakshi Super Speciality Hospital in Madurai. One kidney was sent to Kauvery Speciality Hospital in Tiruchi and the other kidney was sent to Srinivasan Medical College and Hospital in Tiruchi. Eyes (corneas) were sent to Aravind Eye Hospital in Madurai.

Meenakshi Super Speciality Hospital medical team and Melur RDO Sangeetha accorded State honours and handed over the body to the family members. The hospital authorities appealed to the public to come forward and support organ donation.
