Honduras chief accuses Opposition of plotting ‘electoral coup’

Left-wing President Xiomara Castro of Honduras claimed on Thursday (October 30, 2025) that the Opposition was plotting an “electoral coup” in a Presidential vote set for November 30, including to tensions in a marketing campaign marked by mudslinging.

Attorney General Johel Zelaya launched audio recordings on Wednesday (October 29) by which two Opposition members, one in all whom is on the election fee, are purportedly heard discussing “altering the popular vote” in opposition to the ruling Libre celebration with an unidentified member of the armed forces.

The recordings declare to point out the opposition plotting to hurt the re-election probabilities of Ms. Castro’s leftist Libre celebration.

“I condemn in the strongest possible terms this criminal conspiracy aimed at provoking an electoral coup,” Ms. Castro wrote on X, including she had instructed the armed forces to “immediately investigate the participation of any active military personnel.”

She claimed that “the same groups” that orchestrated the 2009 coup that ousted then-president Manuel Zelaya, her husband, had been behind the most recent alleged conspiracy in opposition to the left.
