U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated on Tuesday (September 16, 2025) he anticipated a remaining deal on the short-video app TikTok when President Donald Trump speaks with Chinese chief Xi Jinping on Friday (September 12, 2025).

China had an extended record of asks throughout talks this week in Madrid, Mr. Bessent stated. He described the negotiations as fulsome and carried out with nice respect.

The two sides stated on Monday (September 15, 2025) they’ve reached a framework settlement after months of talks between the world’s No. 1 and No. 2 economies to defuse a wide-ranging commerce conflict that has unnerved international markets.

Mr. Bessent stated Mr. Trump made it clear he would let TikTok, which counts 170 million U.S. customers, go darkish with no deal to modify to U.S.-controlled possession. However, Mr. Trump has prolonged the deadline to succeed in a deal on the app 3 times and was anticipated to take action a fourth time on the upcoming Wednesday (September 17, 2025) deadline.

Details on the industrial phrases with new buyers must be ironed out, Mr. Bessent stated, declining to elaborate.
