The project was unveiled during Netflix’s presentation at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and marks a historic collaboration between two of anime’s most influential studios: Sunrise, known for franchises such as Mobile Suit Gundam, Cowboy Bebop, and Code Geass, and SHAFT, the studio behind Puella Magi Madoka Magica and the Monogatari series.
Set in a bleak future where sunlight has not reached Earth for a century, Fool Night imagines a world pushed to the brink of collapse. With vegetation nearly extinct and oxygen supplies dwindling, humanity turns to a controversial technology known as “transfloration,” which transforms dying humans into plant-like organisms capable of producing oxygen.
At the center of the story is Toshiro Kamiya, a struggling young man trapped in poverty while caring for his mentally ill mother. Faced with mounting financial pressures and a society that increasingly treats human lives as expendable resources, Toshiro is forced to confront an impossible choice: continue living in despair or surrender his humanity through the transfloration process.
The newly released trailer offers a glimpse into the series’ atmosphere, showcasing a permanently darkened world and the disturbing transformation that turns people into bioluminescent “Spirit Flowers.” The footage hints at a blend of environmental science fiction, psychological drama, and body horror.
The anime will be directed by Atsuyuki Yukawa, who previously worked as a unit director on Suzume. Early visuals released alongside the announcement have already drawn praise from manga readers for capturing the series’ unsettling beauty and melancholic tone.
Widely regarded as one of the strongest ongoing dystopian manga of recent years, Fool Night has earned acclaim for its exploration of inequality, environmental collapse, and the value of human life.
Fool Night is set to premiere exclusively on Netflix in 2026.
