Sound pollution by cracker bursting during night raised at DCs phone-in

Raising the matter of sound pollution at the phone-in programme of Deputy Commissioner and Administrator of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) H. V. Darshan here on Wednesday, a senior citizen complained that bursting of cracker during festivals and other events in the city during night is affecting people’s sleep, especially senior citizens.

The senior citizen, G. R. Prabhu from Bejai, told the Deputy Commissioner that during events such as ‘bhoota kola’, crackers are burst during night, sometimes till early morning. Action should be taken to curtail such practices. In his response, the Deputy Commissioner asked Mr. Prabhu to call police over 112 if crackers are burst beyond permissible time limit.

A priest, Stanly Pinto from Mukka complained that apartments and some houses are letting their sewage water into storm water drain of the National Highway 66 under Ward No. 1 near Mukka Bus Stand. The storm water drain is meant to carry sewage water. It is affecting students and others and has given scope for the breeding of mosquitoes.

Shailesh Kadri complained that many people who visit Kadri Cafe hotel park their vehicles on the Kadri main road leading to traffic jam. Steps should be taken to prevent parking of vehicles. Responding to this, the Deputy Commissioner said that the Deputy Commissioner of Police (traffic) will be informed about it to examine and take suitable action.

Jayaprakash from Bunts Hostel area said that there is a need to lay road humps on the main road at Karangalpady as pedestrians find it difficult to cross roads. Suresh Kamath from Lower Car Street said that road humps should be built near Clock Tower and Rao and Rao Circle area to enable people to cross the road.

A citizen from Kottara complained that senior citizens are not getting seats meant for them in city buses and others occupy them. Responding to this, Mr. Darshan said that the Regional Transport Officer will be informed to take action.

Francis D’Souza from Bejai said that many road humps and medians in the city have not been painted and pedestrian crossings have not been marked.

In all, 33 persons called up the Deputy Commissioner in one hour from 11 a.m. to noon.
