The Heritage Buildings Circle of the Public Works Department has floated the tender for the construction of the museum at an estimated cost of ₹51.08 crore.
The State government, in its Budget for 2023-24, had announced a museum would be set up in Thanjavur to highlight the historical importance of the Chola dynasty and to preserve artefacts and relics of that age.
In August that year, Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu, who is also in-charge of the Archaeology Department, had inspected a site identified for setting up the museum not far away from Sri Brihadeeswarar (Big) Temple in the town.
The Department of Museums, while laying down the specifications for the iconic project while calling for Expression of Interest (EOI) for selection of a consultant to prepare the Detailed Project Report earlier, had said that the grand museum would be established on a par with international standards.
The museum incorporating Chola-period architectural elements would highlight the entire Chola dynasty and provide visitors a unique opportunity to experience and learn about the history of the Cholas.
As per the tender notice, the museum building is scheduled to be constructed in 24 months. With January 7 being the last date for submission of bids, the contract is expected to be awarded before the end of the financial year.
